Calling-in Communication

This set of four 4-hour workshops introduces the principles and skills of calling-in communication. The workshops can be taken as a sequence or individually. A 40-hour training of trainers course is available for those who have completed the four-workshop series.

Workshop 1:

Introduction to Calling In

Are difficult conversations—or the lack of authentic conversations—about institutional inequities holding back opportunities for deeper transformation in your organization, community, department, or division? When calling out becomes the discursive norm, it can undermine any equity efforts before you’ve even begun. This workshop explores the importance of building authentic communities as well as the challenges of and opportunities for shifting the discourse so equity can thrive. The concepts and skills covered include calling-out versus calling-in dialogue and practice in calling in during interactive, real-time interactions.

  • Understand the philosophical underpinnings of calling in and linkages to the principles of cultural humility
  • Understand the distinction between calling in and calling out
  • Understand the development of true equity-centered community
  • Develop a communication self-reflection practice

Workshop 2:

Intermediate Calling-in Dialogue

This workshop builds on the concepts and skills covered in the beginning workshop on calling-in dialogue. Topics covered in this intermediate workshop include peace psychology and mindfulness, identifying personal triggers, and practice in conflict situations.

What you will learn:
  • Understand peace psychology and its linkages to mindfulness
  • Practice strategies for shifting discourse and navigating emotional temperature
  • Identify on personal triggers and communication wants and needs
  • Practice calling in during interactive, real-time conflict
Workshops typically include:

  • Real-time coaching
  • Small group discussion on how to foster calling-in in daily life
  • Action planning

Workshop 3:

Advanced Calling-in Dialogue

This workshop builds on the concepts and skills covered in the intermediate workshop on calling-in dialogue. Topics covered in this advanced workshop include conflict transformation theory, mediation, complementary practices, and more extensive practice in conflict situations.

What you
will learn:
  • Understand conflict transformation theory and mediation basics
  • Practice applying the calling-in protocol and humble inquiry
  • Understand complementary communication practices (e.g., motivational interviewing, appreciative inquiry, non-defensive communication, nonviolent communication)
  • Design a self-reflection and compassionate communication action plan
  • Practice conflict coaching for organizational equity resistance

Workshop 4:

Leading Calling-in Mediation Meetings

This workshop focuses on preparing to lead calling-in mediation meetings. The skills covered include practice leading calling-in restorative communication, designing communication and conflict transformation plan, and applying these skills in a variety of settings.

  • Conduct pre-mediation meetings
  • Practice leading calling-in restorative communication meetings
  • Apply calling-in to supervisory meetings, workshop facilitation, classroom settings
  • Design a communication and conflict transformation plan
  • Lead conflict coaching and mediation sessions

Facilitator Training:

Calling-In Facilitation and Training of Trainers

This is a specialized five-day intensive training (40 hours) prepares facilitators and trainers to teach calling in. Participants must have completed all four of the workshops.

  • Train others in a variety of settings to teach calling-in communication

  • Overview of the principles of calling-in communication
  • Small group discussions
  • Practice sessions
